Gizmodo Gets Hands-On With the Zune HD

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 09:35 PM

"Having just played with a prototype for a few minutes, I'm really impressed with the Zune HD. I've got a video, too, showing off how well the animations work. The device is tighter and more physically beautiful than the iPod Touch and it's got a better UI, the main menu's scrolling so natural through the swipe gestures."

The boys at Gizmodo got a chance to check out the Zune HD in person, and managed to not only snap a bunch of geek-lust-incuding photos, they also managed to get it on video - and their camera person understood the whole "focus" thing a bit better. Video after the break. Read more...

Zune: Three Months Later

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Talk" @ 09:30 AM

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/zune-how-weve-lived-with-it-for-three-months-231511.php

""After the iPod came out on top in our Zune v. iPod battle royale, we decided to keep on using the Zune so we could get a long term evaluation on how Microsoft's player stacked up. After nearly three months with the thing, we think we've got some new light to shed."

Gizmodo decided to keep a Zune around for a while, to give it an extended test drive, and see how the Zune experience truly stacks up. Now, three months later, they are back with some additional thoughts. I love how they compare Zune subscription service to "walking in your underwear at your in-laws' house and letting one rip." Yeah, it's that liberating! Gizmodo has nice things to say about song and video playback, as well as battery life, even going as far to say the Zune actually holds a charge longer when not in use. (There seems to have been a lot of negative publicity regarding Zune's battery life. Though I've not ran any hard tests, I've been happy with my battery life. It seems to be about the same as my video iPod.)

Gizmodo Zune Video Walkthrough With Groovy Backbeats

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 05:00 PM

http://www.gizmodo.com/gadgets/press/zune-user-interface-runs-like-butter-213348.php

"So now that you've seen how fast you can beam songs from one Zune player to another, we're gonna drill through the menu system so you can see just how smooth this baby runs in person. Along with Gawker's video guru Richard Blakeley, we hit everything from display settings to the Zune's radio interface. We experienced a brief pause when flipping through photo albums, but it was nothing annoyingly long. And if you're wondering about the techno soundtrack pumping in the background, we'll have a party recap later on today."

Gizmodo has a video walkthrough of the Zune, this time from the Zune launch event party in NYC. If the music is too much for you, there's always the dulcet tones of Ryan Block.

Gizmodo Looks at the Zune

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 01:38 PM

http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/portable-media/zune-first-full-review-212255.php

"The UI is snappy and has lots of zooming, sliding and various cool effects when you're navigating. Luckily, the eye candy doesn't get in the way of usability. The click-pad isn't too bad to use, but it's not touch sensitive like the iPod wheels. The community menu options like sending files and pictures are all over the place. If you hit the middle button to get the context menu, you'll most likely notice an entry called "send", where you can send what you're currently listening to to nearby Zunes. Overall the UI is pretty well designed, and iPod users shouldn't be lost if they decide to migrate."

When it rains, it pours: Gizmodo has published their detailed look at the Zune. Not much new can be said here: they cover all the basics, and point out how great it is that it's upgradeable. This is something I've talked about before, but I think the Zune team is quick to point this out to every reviewer because they have some great stuff planned, but can't be specific about features or time frames. This much is certain: the WiFi on-board gives Microsoft tremendous potential for innovation, and I for one am confident that they'll do exactly that!

Zune Advertising Banners Starting to Appear

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 08:00 PM

Well, the Zune advertising campaign is starting to pick up speed - I hit Gizmodo today and saw a 160 x 600 tower banner. That's great to get the brand out there (even if we're still #17 in Google - doh! It sucks coming late to the party). What's a bit baffling though is that the banners link to the Coming Zune site. You know, the one that's so ultra-hip and cool that you don't really understand what it's trying to tell you, or that the Zune is a media player? I get the whole teaser campaign concept, but it's time to move beyond that now into something more concrete for perspective buyers to check out.
