The Amazingly Fluid Speed of the Zune HD

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 04:09 PM

One word: wow! This video really shows off how fast and fluid the user interface on the Zune is. This is really impressive stuff. There are other videos here (check out the amazing off-axis viewing angle and brightness) and here (showing the HD video out, though unfortunately the camera never quite gets into focus).

Patent Shows Possible Zune Phone Tiled Interface

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 10:25 AM

"A newly published patent application assigned to Microsoft provides a unique insight into what the Zune Phone interface might look like. The patent, filed on June 16th 2006 and published on 12th April 1007 (sic), covers Tile Space User Interface for Mobile devices and discusses how small screens and a large number of features make it "difficult for users to access commonly used data and functions" on many mobile phones."

As a user of Windows Mobile phones, I have to admit that an interface such as the one pictured above (which incidentally ought to be taken with a grain of salt) seems a little too simplistic for my liking. But for the millions of average consumers out there, it is quite possibly attractive and functional. Your thoughts? What would you like to see incorporated in the future Zune Phone interface?

Wired News Praise for Zune

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Talk" @ 02:00 AM

"It's not perfect, but the Zune is a well-designed and well-made alternative to the iPod... I even like the brown color. Don't laugh, it actually looks pretty cool... I've been playing with a Zune for a couple of weeks, and I like it. I like it a lot."

Wired News offers a pretty up-beat Zune review which got me thinking. One of the highlights in almost every Zune review I've read has been the interface. I've seen an almost consensus that the Zune interface is simple, yet sleek, fast, and good looking; a nice improvement over the iPod. It's ironic that user interfaces has been one area that Microsoft historically get trashed. For most, the Zune interface seems to be a welcome change from a Microsoft team. Maybe this is evidence of the freedom the Zune team has been given. Just like the Xbox 360, the interface is definitely a strong point for Zune.
