New Zune HD Games & Apps Released

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Software" @ 11:56 AM

Last week, a series of new games and app updates were released to the Zune Marketplace for your Zune HD:

  • Snowball
  • Finger Physics
  • Tiki Totems
  • A Beanstalk Tale
  • Alarm Clock
  • Facebook (Updated)
  • Twitter (Updated)

For anyone keeping track, that's 27 games and 12 communication/entertainment/other - for a grand total of 39 apps. My general feeling is, why bother? I don't think 39 free apps are going to sway people who are looking for a device with apps - they're going to go for an iPod Touch. It's nice that they're all free, but in the end, I'd prefer to see effort spend on the device and desktop software that would improve upon the things that we bought a Zune HD for in the first place: media consumption.

Windows Live Messenger, and Three New Games, Make it to the Zune HD

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Software" @ 04:06 PM

The slow but steady trickle of Zune HD apps continues; if you look in the Zune Marketplace, you'll find a brand new Windows Live Messenger application ready for download. You'll also find three new games: WordMonger, Dr. Optics Light Lab, and Castles and Canons. If you're a Zune HD customer, this added value is pretty cool. If you're a Zune fan like me though, the app strategy on the Zune HD continues to be a frustrating puzzle. Screen shots of all three games after the break. Read more...

Two More Zune HD Apps Trickle Out

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Software" @ 11:22 AM

Hey there, Zune HD owners! You now have access to two more apps in the Zune Marketplace: Animalgrams, a word game, and MSN Money, a personal finance app. Basically /msn Money is a stock ticker app with a few extras added in. About two months ago we saw another two apps, so at the rate this is going, the Zune HD app catalog should hit 100 apps by 2017 or so. Hooray. More images after the break. Read more...

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Events" @ 11:00 AM

http://store.shure.com/store/shure/...tID.105181400#t

We've got another great contest for you, and this time because it's an accessory that works with so many different products, it's a network-wide contest. The prizes? I'm giving away three pairs of SHURE SE210 Earphones (MSRP $179.99 USD), courtesy of the generous folks at Shure. Our very own David Tucker reviewed this earphones back in September, and he loved them - so I'm sure the three winners will as well. The SE210's feature a noise-isolating sleeves that block 90 percent of the ambient noise, and the more noise you can block out, the more you can enjoy your tunes.

What do you have to do to win? Simply post a message in this discussion thread telling me which type of device (or devices) you'd use the headphones with. A Windows Mobile smartphone? A Zune? An iPod? An iPhone? A netbook or laptop? That's it - one post per person, and the contest closes on Tuesday the 15th of December at 12pm GMT -7. This contest is world-wide; I'll be shipping you the prizes myself.

Remember that all first posts in our system are held in moderation, so if this contest entry is your first post, please wait up to 48 hours before getting concerned if your post hasn't shown up yet - it will. Winners will be contacted via private forum message, so ensure that you have email notifications turned on. Winners will have 72 hours to claim their prize.

Let's see those entries!

UPDATE:The contest is now closed, and the three winners are GqSkrub, webguy248, and deenoo. Thanks to everyone for entering - it was great to see so many entries! And big thanks to SHURE for donating the prizes!

The 10 Free Tracks Explained

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 10:10 AM

“Zunerama has a great FAQ on Zune's new subscription model of Zune Pass + 10 free songs to keep per month. Inspired by the FAQ and in part by an email conversation with some friends (thanks Mike), I thought I would contribute a few thoughts by walking myself (and by proxy you) through the process of using these new credits on two albums in the Zune Marketplace and seeing where we end up.”

So I could take the time to walk everyone through all of the details of the surprising new 10 free songs feature. But Zunerama and Social Circle have done such a great job on their FAQs and walkthroughs that I’ll just redirect everyone to look at those instead! Zunerama’s FAQ is a great 10 question FAQ that just explains the basics and I think probably answers some of the confusion about this feature. The Social Circle walkthrough takes you through, complete with pictures, the process of getting tracks for both DRM and non-DRM tracks.

Both of these I think you’ll find invaluable resources to getting your monthly downloads as easily as you can!

College Students: Get Free Stuff from Zune!

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Events" @ 08:30 PM

http://channel8.msdn.com/Posts/Zune...ormRoomContest/

"There is usually some pretty sweet stuff going on over at the Zune College hangout, and through the end of November (11/30/08 to be exact), there’s something extra-wicked-awesome WinkYou can enter a competition to win a Dell Laptop, an Xbox 360, a Zune, and other cool gear. Oh and with a tagline like “No purchase necessary to enter or win,” what the heck are you still doing here??!?! GO SIGN UP!"

Usually we like to add some clever quip or commentary on the story content, but in this case I think Max has said it all. If you're a college student in need of some cool and FREE gear (and let's be serious, who isn't?), go check out Zune College and register. Oh, and if you're lucky enough to have Zune come visit your campus, you might even be able to get a discount on a few accessories and players. Even though we tend to be broke most of the time, it's good of the Zune team to show some love to us Collegiate folk.

Comic-Con On Your Zune

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 08:47 AM

http://on10.net/blogs/sarahintampa/...ideos-for-zune/

“The Xbox Live Marketplace team has added free Comic-Con 2008 videos to the Zune Marketplace. The event, which ran from July 24-27 in San Diego, California, is a huge convention for fans of comic books, sci-fi, fantasy, anime, horror, and other related arts spanning all genres from books to TV to film. Once devoted just to comics, today’s convention has everything from toys to video games to panels featuring Hollywood actors and producers talking about their latest big movie and screening trailers of highly anticipated films.”

I’m sure that a few of you here are comic book fans. If so you’ll want to check out the Zune Marketplace since the Xbox Live Team has decided to share the videos with us! (Aww, thanks guys!) Of course, since the Zune Marketplace software is free to anyone then even if you don’t have a Zune or an Xbox and want to see the videos, here’s a perfect excuse to go download them and watch them on your PC. Good catch by Sarah Perez!

Microsoft Giving Away Zunes!

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 08:16 PM

http://www.windowslive-hotmail.com/...e_Zune_Email_EN

Oh, Microsoft, you’re sneaky! But that’s ok because you’re giving out free swag. From today until March 31st, Microsoft is giving away a free Zune 8! There is a catch, however. You have to log in via your web enabled phone to Hotmail and send Microsoft an email from there. And that’s how they’re sneaky: pushing Hotmail and the Zune at you all at once. I hope I win! And, well, good luck to the rest of you. Maybe.

Good eye, Susan, at Got Zune for spotting this.
