Brown Halo 3 Zune for Military Personnel

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Hardware" @ 06:57 AM

http://kotaku.com/gaming/omzg-its-brown/new-halo-3-zune-military-edition-286663.php

The release of Halo 3 is close enough that you can count the time down in weeks. Soon, everyone will be finishing the fight with Master Chief and the Arbiter. But while there are plenty of people eager to pretend that they're the Master Chief, there are plenty of young men and women serving the US Armed Forces who aren't playing a game. To help recognize them and to cater to their interest in Halo 3, Microsoft is releasing a special Halo 3 Zune, military edition. This brown Zune is identical to the black Halo 3 Zune. Well, other than being brown and only available on military bases. Microsoft already donated 300 of the devices to the USO for a special care package. This Zune will be available later this month and at a discounted price but the exact details weren't available.

I think this is a very nice gesture for the men and women in our armed forces. I happen to think that they have the best looking Zune that's on the market! Of course it'll blend in with their camo fatigues so hopefully they don't wash them.

Promo Background Images for Your Zune

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Media" @ 02:38 AM

The Meet Zune section of Zune.net features a promo image of the different coloured Zune devices and a fruity mix of background images. Four of the background images have been made publicly available, courtesy of Zune Insider, and we've resized them to 240 x 320 for your consumption. You can find them after the break. Simply right-click an image and select "Save Picture As...". Next, sync the image to your Zune and follow these steps to set it as your new background. Enjoy!

Update: We've added the red koi background image, so all five are now available after the break.

The Tech Report Compares Zune and iPod

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 05:00 PM

http://techreport.com/reviews/2007q2/zune-vs-ipod/index.x?pg=5

"Launched back in 2001, Apple's iPod has arguably become the most iconic electronic device of the 21st century. With sales of over 100 million units, the iPod has dominated the market for portable audio—and now video—players...during the iPod's ascension, Microsoft worked with various hardware partners on all sorts of would be iPod killers, with little success. Then Redmond took matters into its own hands, creating the Zune media player to directly challenge Apple's iMonopoly. On paper, the Zune looks like a competent challenger, too; it has a much larger screen than the iPod, integrated wireless capabilities, and support for subscription-based music services. But is it any better than Apple's status quo? I've spent three months with an iPod and a Zune to find out, and the answer might surprise you."

This is one of the best, most fair-minded reviews of the Zune that I've seen in a long time. It pulls no punches, but also isn't as iPod-biased as nearly everything else I've seen out there. In fact, he's one of the few people that has the guts to actually criticize the iPod's much-vaunted scroll-wheel that, in truth, is much harder to use and control than the Zune's much-criticized control pad. If you're looking for a comparison between the iPod and the Zune, this is a great resource. One thing made me chuckle though: I'm constantly amazed at how completely polarizing the brown Zune is!. In this article, the author spends several paragraphs trashing the brown, but one of the few Zune owners I know bought the brown and quite likes it. Brown is a very popular colour nowadays, especially among young urbanites, and those cool indy-music-hipsters that Microsoft wanted to appeal to. I wouldn't buy a brown Zune myself, but I can completely understand why Microsoft released one.

Steve Kaneko Tackles the Brown Question

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 07:40 PM

http://www.zuneinsider.com/2006/10/interview_zune_.html

"Why brown? Because love it or hate it, people feel something. Artists and musicians take chances everyday, and so will we. What few people haven’t seen yet is that we didn’t stop with just brown, we encased it in an “anti-freeze green” double-shot. There’s nothing like it out there that resembles the warmth and grittiness of certain styles of music. It is both formal and informal. And it appeals to men and women. It’s a color that’s both everyday and high fashion at the same time"

I guess that's a fair response to Microsoft's choice of brown as the trademark colour of the Zune. I'll admit that it's grown on me. The brown Zune doesn't seem as bad now as it did weeks ago when it was first revealed, though I'm still a sucker for the black Zune with its cool blue trim. Back to the interview, Steve goes on to discuss other aspects of the Zune design. Most of it is focused on the current. I'm actually interested in the future. What does Microsoft have in store for the second-generation Zune and beyond, and even nano-sized Zune devices (assuming they're in the making)?

Your Favourite Zune Colour?

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 06:16 PM

Simple post. Which of the three Zune colours do you prefer? Note the existence of the colour trim around the edge of the device (green with brown, blue with black, and black with white). Personally, I still haven't decided between black and white. As for the brown, well, that's a little out of my league. ;-)
