Zune Branding Gone From New Xbox 360 Dashboard

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 07:00 PM

Paul Thurrot called out the elephant in the room: there's no trace of Zune branding anywhere that we can see on the new Xbox 360 dashboard design. It's simply "music" and "video" now. Frankly, that makes sense - it's a bit of nonsense that we need to go into the Zune interface to watch videos...

It seems pretty clear that the Zune as a device is dead, and as a service, it's on the way out. Quite a shame really...

SWITCHED Asked People in New York What a "Zune" Was...Uh-oh

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 12:11 PM

"We understand that Apple's brand-name recognition stretches from one hemisphere to the next, and that competitors face a nigh-impossible task of out-marketing the Cupertino giant. But, still, we expected at least a few people to get this one..."

I don't think the results of this will surprise anyone. The article mentions the "fanfare" with which Microsoft launched the Zune HD last year, and I have to wonder what the author is thinking of - because there was no fanfare. I haven't seen any form of mainstream media advertising for the Zune HD, so is it any wonder that no one knows what it is? I can't help but notice the demographic of the people they stopped - other than one young kid, most of them didn't look like the Xbox 360-owning type...and anyone with an Xbox 360 will know what "Zune" means, at least in a general sense (an entertainment service). Also, given that the Zune is a USA-only product, one has to wonder how many of those people were from the USA, or visiting from some place else...

A Zune With School Spirit?

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune Talk" @ 07:00 AM

I love all things technology. There is something I love more than technology though and that’s the University of Florida. The athletics of course are the most visible thing others see but I am a Gator through and through. I thought of getting the Colorware treatment on my Zune so that I could have mine in Orange & Blue. After Jason’s very mediocre experience, however, that idea went out the window.

There may be a better option for me one day. The Zune team seems interested in providing branded Zunes to schools who are interested. According to Michael Greene, Zune is going to be working with large institutions to brand devices for their own uses. They do present some interesting possibilities of things to do with it. Such as trading flash cards between incoming freshmen. Do they SERIOUSLY think that’s a good idea?

Other, better, ideas include preloading school songs and videos from professors. Those ideas are certainly more appealing. If Florida offered a branded Zune through the bookstore I’d buy one pretty quick and would love if it included songs or better yet, videos. As far as how interesting this is to the general populace? Well, it would be nice if anyone could special order a Zune with a logo on it.
