Microsoft Releases Windows Phone 7 Connector on the Mac App Store

Posted by Darius Wey in "Apple Software (OS X)" @ 08:48 PM

http://www.microsoft.com/windowspho...-connector.aspx

"Windows Phone 7 Connector is a simple, easy-to-use application designed to sync your favorite media files from your Mac, with your Windows Phone 7 or Zune HD. You can also sync photos and videos you captured on your phone with your Mac, and when needed, update your Windows Phone 7 software."

Microsoft has released v1.0 of Windows Phone 7 Connector to the masses, while exploring new territory by releasing it on the Mac App Store. It's a free app that lets you connect your Windows Phone 7 device or Zune HD to your Mac, sync your music, videos, and podcasts from iTunes and your photos to and from iPhoto, and even download and install the latest Windows Phone 7 updates as they're made available. Alas, there's no option to browse the Marketplace, but at least this is better than nothing, right? Scoot off to the App Store and grab it today.

WP7 Connector Hack Opens Up Mac Syncing To Zune HD

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Content Creation & Management" @ 12:30 PM

http://www.zuneboards.com/forums/zu...t-required.html

Zune HD finally comes to the Mac! Well, sort of...

ZuneBoards' nate8nate sniffed out a hidden setting in the Mac version of Windows Phone Connector that allows the ZuneHD to sync just like a Windows Phone device. Surprisingly, the hack is pretty simple (setting the boolean value ZuneEnabled to true), which also likely means there's a reason this was turned off. At the moment it's ZuneHD-only and wireless syncing isn't quite there, but very cool nonetheless. nate8nate says that the latest version has much more Zune-related stuff than the first release, suggesting that Microsoft is inching towards full Zune/Mac compatibility. The real question is whether this changes the game or is just a nice-to-have in the larger Zune strategy.

The Official Windows Phone Connector for OS X

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Windows Phone Software" @ 05:56 PM

http://electricpig.co.uk/2010/10/21...tech+news+site)

"Windows Phone 7 Connector is coming, for all you Windows Phone 7 obsessives stashing media on your previously incompatible OS X machine. No, it's not Zune for Mac, but it does get the job done: we've been testing it out over the last few days, so read on for our impressions."

As I suspected, 99% of the headlines out there over the past week the were proclaiming that the "Zune desktop software is coming to OS X" are flat-out wrong. It's amazing how people twist and conflate pieces of information. Anyway, if you're an OS X user and you want a simple way to get music, photos, and videos onto your Windows Phone 7 - the reviewer doesn't say whether it also works with the Zune...I'd like to think it does given the platform similarities, but I can't say for sure. The beta comes out October 24th, at which point I'll take it for a spin myself and see what works and what doesn't. What I don't understand is why Microsoft is being so coy about this - it's a pretty significant move!

The Secret Life of Nicholas Deleon

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 09:30 AM

http://www.crunchgear.com/2009/09/1...-what-the-heck/

"I can live in Mac completely as I normally do, making zero concessions or compromises, then boot into Windows occasionally to sync my music to the Zune HD. I don’t have two separate music libraries or anything, but rather the master Mac iTunes library, then the Zune software builds an index and syncs the music to the Zune HD based on said library. Is it an elegant solution? Maybe not, but it definitely works and is dead simple."

Nicholas Deleon over at CrunchGear has an interesting writeup about his double life as a Mac user and Zune HD fan. Its an interesting perspective from someone who doesn't really use Microsoft products except when he has to. To use his Zune he manages all of his music on his Mac with iTunes and then boots into Windows when he wants to sync. This works for him I think since he's not a subscription user and doesn't add music too often. That said, he must really like the Zune HD because that's a lot of work to use an media player!

Interestingly, he seems to like the Zune software more than iTunes but knows he won't likely be using it anytime soon on the Mac OS. If you're a Mac user and the Zune is at all interesting to you, his article is worth a read!

Using a Zune HD with Your Mac

I don't generally think that the market for Mac-using Zune-buying people is that big, but hey, if you're in that group, here's one solution for you.

Zunes For Macs

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 10:53 PM

http://www.ihaveazune.com/?p=1137

"I know it sounds crazy but I think Zune should seriously consider rolling out Zune for Mac program. Let me tell you why. First off, a lot of Mac users are tired of the iPod. Most Mac users have probably owned at least 2 iPod’s at this point and would probably be interested in switching over to another player. If for no other reason, just to give it a try. Second, Mac owners like to think they are different. I think Zune could pray on Mac users counter culture sensibilities."

Stefan, I like your spirit, I really do! But I really wonder if there are a lot of Mac users who are tired of the iPod and wanting to jump ship to the Zune. I have to be honest. I just don’t see it happening. Apple market share is only around 7% anyway. Even if a generous 50% of all Mac users wanted a Zune that only accounts for a miniscule part of the market.

So how about this: If Microsoft can do it without committing any resources that are committed to making the Zune better then sure, I’m all for it! But if they need to spend valuable time and energy that could be used on adding features to develop what would almost certainly be a niche market then I’d rather not see it happen. (even if the Zune software DOES look good on that desktop!)

Defying the Laws of Physics: Zune on a Mac

Zune on a Mac? Yes, it's possible - and no, I'm not talking about the Boot Camp workaround. Parallels Desktop for Mac makes it easy to run Windows and Mac OS simultaneously, although unlike older virtualization products such as Microsoft's retired Virtual PC for Mac, Parallels Desktop offers an extra set of features that take the virtualization experience to the next level. The latest beta offers a new mode known as Coherence, which blends Windows with Mac OS to create an ultimate desktop environment where interaction is seamless. Both Windows and Mac applications appear on a single desktop and co-exist in the Dock and the Cmd+Tab interface.
