Heads Up: Zune Online Properties Down Sept 14-15

"As we work to bring you the next level of Zune entertainment, we want to inform you the Zune service will be down starting at 11:00 am (PDT) September 14th until the early hours of September 15th. During this time you will not be able to sign into Zune.net, Zune forums, or Zune Marketplace. We're sorry for this inconvenience, but come back to www.zune.net on September 15th and get ready to experience a whole new world of Zune."

This should come as no suprise, but the Zune team is going to be taking down the Marketplace, forums, and Zune.net the night before the launch of Zune HD on September 15. If you've got anything important to download, any messages to send, or questions to ask, I'd suggest you do them ahead of time.

Zune.net Going Down Tonight For Upgrades

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 05:28 PM

Tonight at 10pm pacific time, Zune.net will be going down for some updates - the site is expected to be down for a houew hours. When it's back online, the following new features will have been added:

  • Users will be able to follow an artist, getting news and updates about that artist
  • RSS feed aggregation will allow users to add links to an artist page
  • Performance improvements from distributed caching
  • Enhanced Social data is exposed on the home page - a listening now module and additional recommended content
  • Music video previews and concert dates will be available on Zune.net

That's a pretty decent list of upgrades to the Zune.net experience - though I do pretty much everything via the Zune software client, so I'm not sure how much I'll be using those features. Still, nice to see - hopefully there will be a Zune software client update that brings some of these features into the software.

When Good Plans Go Bad

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Talk" @ 05:00 PM

http://dirtydogstink.com/blog/2007/02/20/ExpectItNOTToWork.aspx

"I got to work this morning and after catching up on my reading I decided to check out some tunes on Zune Marketplace... Where was my "download" option? I have a Zune Pass and should be able to download/stream 95+% of the music in the Marketplace... I finally went to an internal mail list and saw a thread titled "download option disabled with zune pass." Ah-ha, that looks familiar! Sure enough it directed me to Cesar Menendez's post from yesterday: Zune Marketplace: Down Between 2 and 5 AM PDT (Maintenance Only). But I'm sitting at my desk and it's about 9am PDT. A full four hours past the end of the maintenance timeframe. Oops. So I have a few suggestions for the Zune group..."

And the number one suggestion is? Expect it not to work. If you have an upgrade planned, and it's going to take 3 hours. Expect it to take 6 to 9 hours. As someone who has worked in a technology related field for the past 12 years, I can completely sympathize with this sentiment. Just last night, I myself had an equipment migration planned. I explained to my wife how it wouldn't take more than about an hour. Four hours later, I was finally on my way home, after having rolled back the changes because of some unexpected difficulties. It does seem like these types of projects always take much longer than anticipated.
