The Zune HD is Dead. Long Live the Zune HD!

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 11:22 AM

There have been a few updates in the world of Zune over the past week or so.

First, Microsoft has discontinued Zune Originals. That's right, no more custom Zune HDs are available for order. I did a little eye-roll when this happened, because I wanted a 64 GB Zune HD but was waiting for the price to drop a little more. Looks like I waited too long! The Zune Originals Web site says to go look for a Zune HD at Best Buy or Wal-mart, but good luck with that. Zune all but died at retail a long time ago.

In the same week, the Zune team released nine new Zune HD apps, along with updates for a few older apps. Anythingbutipod has the full breakdown on the new apps. I'm in Canada, and despite the announcement two full months ago about the Zune HD apps coming to Canada, I'm still seeing this ugly error when I try to browse the Zune HD apps in the marketplace:

Lastly, there's software update for the Zune HD that takes it from 4.5 Build 109 to 4.5 Build 114. I have no idea what it adds or changes, because Microsoft doesn't release changelogs about the update.

It baffles me as to why Microsoft continues to release apps for a product they've ignored and marginalized in an epic way. I mean, what's the point?

Zune Originals for Canada...Not Quite Ready Yet

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 02:50 PM

When we reported last week that Zune Originals were now available for Canadians to order from, well, it seems that wasn't exactly true. Zune Thoughts reader Bob tried to order one, but the US site doesn't allow for the input of Canadian provinces. When he tried to toggle the location to Canada, the site fails to load. He contacted Zune tech support about the issue, and this was their response:

"Dear Bob,

Thank you for your inquiry. The Zune HD devices have recently become available to Canadian customers. Unfortunately, the Canadian Zune Store website is currently under construction to accommodate the new changes. We apologize for the inconvenience this causes you. We recommend periodically checking the website, it should be up and running by next week.

Welcome to the Social!

Rebecca C
The Zune Originals Team"

So it seem like the announcement from the Zune team was a bit premature - no Zune Originals for us Canucks just yet!

Zune Originals Now Available in Canada

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 10:21 AM

The Zune HD came out in September 2009. A year and a half later, it's now going to be available officially in Canada via the Zune Originals Web site. Nice to see, but is it too late for anyone to care? It's 2011 and while I still believe the Zune HD is a great media player, technology marches onward and the first-generation Tegra hardware and low-resolution screen don't exactly stack up well against an iPod Touch 4G with a Retina display. I've been wish for some news on the Zune hardware front, but this wasn't what I was expecting. And it kind of seems like Microsoft has quit updating the Zune originals series - look at the Xbox games collection...there's nothing current in there.

Yeah, I'm a little grumpy about the state of Zune. :-(

Valentines Zune Originals are Up!

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Hardware" @ 04:04 PM

Perhaps it has something to do with all the love the Zune guys feel at this time of year, but for the last three years the Zune Originals team have brought out a set of limited edition tattoo engravings to celebrate the Valentines Day holiday. There are ten designs in all, and all but one feature the heart shape in some fashion. Each of the Zune HD's six colors is available for free engraving, and can be ordered in 16 or 32 GB variety (it looks like we're going to have to wait a little longer for a 64 GB model after all.) Those finding themselves less interested in heart-covered patterns this February 14 can still pick up a design from the Artist, MLS, or Xbox series, at the usual $15 charge.

New Zune Colours on Zune Originals Confirmed

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 03:50 PM

There you have it. Exciting, no? Magenta is coming on December 1st, and so is Purple. I'm kind of curious about these choices because magenta and purple aren't exactly far apart on the colour spectrum. Myself, all I want is a Zune HD with 64 GB of storage. Colours are great, but capacity matters even more.

Zune HD Originals Starting to Arrive

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Hardware" @ 04:11 PM

"FedEx is starting to drop off the long awaited (read: delayed) customized Zune Originals direct from Microsoft's factories in China. Those who ordered a Zune Original as an express order got a little treat for their patience in putting up with the delay- $15 credit to be spent in the Zune Marketplace."

Finally, someone with some photography skills gets their hands on a Zune Originals device! You can always count on Grahm Skee from anythingbutipod to know how to take a good picture. Check out the gallery for all the pics - it's amazing how the blue looks so different depending on the angle. I haven't ordered a Zune Originals yet because I'm worried I won't like the colours...I know I already don't like any of the art designs. Honestly, I'm pretty disappointed with the Originals this time around - I can't understand why the Zune team would change what was such a successful collection of colours and designs from last time. I think I'm going to stick with the 16 GB black Zune HD for now and wait for a 64 GB model in better colours and designs. I know, it might be a long wait...

Zune Originals Colours: Not Quite as Awful as I Feared

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 10:00 AM

I had really high hopes for getting a sweet red 32 GB Zune HD, but when I looked at the Zune Originals site and saw the magenta/pink preview image, I immediately disliked the colour. I checked it on my colour-corrected monitor, then on another monitor, and it had the same awful lipstick-at-a-rave colour on both. Yuck! And the blue custom? Rather than a bold, vibrant royal blue, it looked like a couple of shades darker than baby blue - again, not compelling. Well, it looks like the renders aren't very accurate, because in the photo above, Paul Thurrott shows us the three Zune Originals colours. They're not quite the colours I'd have hoped for, but they definitely look better than the renders on the Zune Originals site. I suppose part of the problem is that they're not plastic shells, so the colours are going to end up looking different...still, I'm less excited about the Zune Originals than I once was. And what's with there being no 32 GB Zune HD in black from Zune Originals? Black, the default, non-offensive colour that is a great fall-back colour if you don't like any of the other options? Not offered. I think that's a big mistake on Microsoft's part.

And maybe I'm just cranky from having to stay up late last night, but I'm not finding the customizations compelling this time around. The Zune team removed all of the "tattoo" designs offered with previous generation Zunes (which is what I got on my red Zune 80), so your only options are the artist series, MLS series, or Xbox series. The artist series might be cool for some people, but as I looked through every image, only one or two were even remotely interesting - most were too over the top for my taste. MLS? I'm not a sports guy - other than MMA - so that's a fail for me. And the Xbox series? The Gears of War 2 logo looks slick, but I haven't played any of the other games more than a few minutes so wouldn't want them stamped on my Zune.

I can't help but feel disappointed in this initial release of Zune Originals - between the iffy colours and the lack of cool tattoo options, this doesn't seem like a great start for making cool-looking customized Zunes.

UPDATE: Looks like the Zune HD will be available in black, 32 GB, eventually. Weird that it's not available at launch though!

July Zune Accessory Sale

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 06:31 AM

"Throughout the month of July, the Zune Originals store, an offshoot of Zune.net, is offering many of its Zune accessories at 50% off, and quite a few more at smaller discounts. If you own a Zune, there is no better time to pick up those accessories you’ve been wanting."

This is a pretty good time to buy! The challenge is figuring out what is on sale. If you go to the Zune Originals store then you'll find that the prices have been adjusted on their info page. The only way to know for sure is to compare the prices to those at Zune.net since those have not been adjusted. A quick check revealed that the sync cable and the premium headphones mentioned in the article at htmlcenter are both on sale. Unfortunately it appears that the speakers are not. I'd have loved an iHome for $50! (How about that, iHome? I'll send you a check for $50 and you send me a speaker? Let's make this happen.)

Zune Originals: Spring Edition And More!

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 10:39 AM

"Starting today, Zune Originals, the online customization store that lets people personalize Zune players with detailed engraved artwork, is releasing a new collection of designs that select artists created to celebrate spring. The Spring Collection features designs from three artists, APAK, Carolina Melis and Linn Olofsdotter and will only be available at ZuneOriginals.net."

By today they really mean about 3 weeks ago since I'm a little behind on my news postings. There's a great collection of spring related designs from the three mentioned artists. All of these are of course only available at the Zune Originals site.

Not only that, I don't know if these other collections were ever mentioned but there are some other very cool collections there and when it comes time for a new Zune I may have to consider one of them. The two that I'm talking about are the Chinese and Western Zodiacs. The zodiacs don't actually mean anything to me but they are pretty cool!

Microsoft Exploring Other Zune Orignals Designs?

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 07:50 PM

I received a survey tonight, on behalf of Microsoft's Zune group, asking me questions about my experience ordering my Zune Originals Zune, a red Zune 80. Most of the questions were quite mundane, asking me about my thoughts on the ease of use of the site, speed of ordering/shipping, etc. The one question that caught my eye is shown above: Microsoft is obviously guaging reaction to the idea of doing new Zune Orignals designs. Trimmed out of the screen shot were other options, including popular brands (Adidas, Burton, Pepsi), gaming (Sonic, Mario, Halo), cartoon/anime (Naruto, Spongebox Squarepants), colleges (Duke, UCLA), professional sports teams (NFL, NBA), and movie characters. I think the ability to upload your own design would be a killer addition to Zune Originals - people could have a lot of fun with that!

Zune Originals Site Now Open to Canadians, New Designs Now Public

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune News" @ 03:00 PM

One day ahead of the official launch, the Zune originals site is now live and Canadians can order a customized Zune for no added charge. All six of the new Canadian-artist designs are now live as well, so you can go check them out (I dig the Meomi stuff). Also, the Zune Originals site is also selling the Microsoft-branded accessories so you can pick up a dock, car pack, leather case, etc. to go with your new Zune. Nice! And speaking of Zune Originals, keep your eye on the site tomorrow...

Say Hello To My Little Friend...

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Zune Talk" @ 12:00 AM

That's right, I finally got my hands on a Zune Original! I had a friend order me one, and it just arrived today. I love it - the red is rich and luscious, just how I like my reds to be. ;-) The wave design on the back looks amazing as well...I dubbed it RedSpartan (which breaks away from my tradition of naming my computers and mobile devices after Japanese weapons, but it seemed like the right thing to do).
