This Is What a Zune HD White Screen of Death Looks Like

Posted by Adam Krebs in "Zune Hardware" @ 03:34 PM

http://gizmodo.com/5374530/what-a-b...play-looks-like

"It's tough to know just how often this particular problem is occurring, but we've heard a fair share of reports on the Zune HD's otherwise gorgeous OLED display having performance glitches. And needless to say, you'd notice it. Here, the touch controls are 100% intact; the problem is that the bottom majority of the screen is completely washed out in a bright, white filter."

We'd heard about the non-responsive screen issue last week, but this one seems to be unrelated. A white mask shows up over the lower half of the screen (it appears to cover everything but the "breadcrumb" navigation area of the interface.) As Gizmodo points out, at 28 seconds in it appears the colors show up normally, lending credence to the theory that it's merely a firmware-based glitch and can be fixed in a future update.

Zune HD Screen Not Responsive

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 08:00 AM

http://forums.zune.net/0/1/524190/S...ost.aspx#524190

“Preordered a Zune 32 GB, it arrived on the 17th and have been using it for two days now. The touch screen is not responding, and there are random clicks despite the fact that i'm not even touching the screen sometimes. It has been updated to the 4.1 using the Zune 4 software. The firmware has been reinstalled twice (method 1) and the device has been formatted (method 2) twice following these instructions…”

Reader Ben pointed this out to us and as I don’t yet have a Zune HD, I’m not familiar with the issues that it may be experiencing. This comes from the official Zune forums. Has anyone else out there suffered the issues that this poor user has? They’ve apparently had sporadic touch screen issues that they couldn’t resolve and are RMAing their Zune HD to Microsoft.

Of course because when one thing goes wrong, everything goes wrong, the poor user was given error messages from the Zune support site when they were in the RMA process! So has anyone (hopefully not) run into any issues like this? If so, did you fix them and how?

PDASmart Offers Zune Screen Replacement

Posted by David Tucker in "Zune News" @ 08:14 AM

http://www.pdasmart.com/zunerepaircenter80gb.htm

“PDASmart, the leading developer of handheld performance upgrades and accessories, announced today the immediate availability of an acrylic lens replacement for the 80gb Zune MP3 Player. The PDASmart upgrade is for the person who has cracked their glass or scratched it. This part was developed after many of the Zune users out there complained that they cracked their glass lens and cannot use or see the lcd behind the lens. Pdasmart decided to create a replacement that could take the abuse and not crack again causing the end-user another bad day. Being acrylic plastic, the part will withstand more pressure and abuse unlike the glass originally in the Zune. "After hearing customers complain about broken glass, we decided to move forward with the development of the Zune 80gb Plastic Lens replacement to help customers regain the use of their MP3 player", said CEO Trey Mattox of Optimistic Enterprises.”

This is great news for at least Zune 80 owners. I could have used this with my Zune 30 when I scratched the screen. I guess it’s not economical for Microsoft to provide this service so it’s good to see that someone out there is. You can do it yourself for $50 or have PDASmart do it for $65 which includes parts and labor. My only complaint is that it’s acrylic and not glass. They try and sell it off that it will stand up to punishment better than glass will but acrylic is very susceptible to scratching so only do this if you have no choice. It’s better than the alternative at least of buying a completely new Zune if you broke your screen.

More Reports of Cracked Screens

Posted by Aaron Roma in "Zune Talk" @ 07:44 PM

http://www.cliczune.com/2007/03/proofs_of_zune_.html

"There were reports a few weeks ago about Zune screens that were cracking for no reason. Some people thought that overheating problems coming from the battery could eventually cause the screen to crack. But new information is showing that the screens can implode without a major hit."

There has been more discussion over on Cliczune this week on the screen cracking issue that was brought up around the first of February. There have been a number of reported incidences, though they still remain few and far between. The cause of the issue also still remains a mystery.

Batteries Causing Screen Cracks?

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 12:00 PM

http://www.engadget.com/2007/01/31/zune-screens-cracking-from-battery-pressure/

"Interesting news on the Zune front: a friendly tipster's buddy works at a Microsoft call center and handles Zune-related issues. Apparently they've received numerous reports of the Zune screen cracking for no apparent reason, after being left charging overnight. Our tipster's friend conjectures that the lithium ion battery -- which resides right behind the top half of the Zune's screen -- is expanding from overheating and putting too much pressure on the screen, causing it to crack. Unfortunately, Microsoft currently regards the issue as outside warranty coverage, leaving the victims with a broken Zune and nowhere to turn.

A quick skim of the Engadget comments sees many Zune users leaving their devices charging overnight with no problems whatsoever, so it's tempting to tag this whole story as "nasty rumour slash scam". Although, if you're one of the few who have reported cracking screens to Microsoft, we'd sure like to hear from you.
