And When The Cloud Breaks, Your Data Will Fall...

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 08:00 AM

It's all about The Cloud these days - your data, you entertainment, your everything - stored on a service that you can access with any online connection. The benefits are many, but what you don't always hear about are the down-sides of everything being cloud-based. What if you get locked out of your account? I've heard of more than a few people that get locked out of their Gmail account or who can't access their Gmail calendar. It happens to Hotmail and Yahoo users as well. What if the company hosting your information deletes it, either accidentally or not, or goes out of business? That's not an uncommon problem. In terms of uptime most cloud services are fairly robust, when things go wrong, they can really ruin your day. Read more...

Goodbye Carbonite, Hello Mozy

Posted by Jason Dunn in "Digital Home Talk" @ 10:30 AM

A couple of years ago I made an impassioned plea to all the readers of our sites to implement a solid backup solution, preferably an off-site one. I figured it was time for an update on my solutions, and a refresher for everyone on the importance of backing up their data.

I was a Carbonite user for a couple of years, but last year I discovered something quite ugly: Carbonite filtered out EXE files, ISO files, and a few other file types. And as for EXE files, I purchase digital software quite often, and these EXE files are required if I need to re-install the software. I consider both ISO and EXE files to be part of my data - things that, if I lost, I'd be very upset because they'd be difficult to get back or re-create. Read more...

Microsoft Green Lights Re-Downloading

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 11:00 AM

File this one under the "w00t" category. According to a report at Gizmodo, Microsoft will allow you to re-download tracks purchased from the Zune Marketplace up to five times (plus a few more if you contact tech support). This is unlike Apple's "purchase once - download once" policy (though we've heard that if you beg really hard, they do let you download purchased tracks a second time). Whichever way you look at it, Microsoft's policy is sure to please the 99% of us who have a habit of reminding ourselves to backup, but never do. Yes, you know who you are. :-)
