Microsoft Australia Warns Against Early Adoption of Zune

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 07:50 PM

http://www.smh.com.au/news/digital-music/local-zune-early-adopters-warned-to-wait/2007/03/07/1173166764794.html

"Microsoft has strongly advised Australians to avoid buying its Zune music player from local retailers. The software giant is yet to announce plans to distribute the device in Australia, but that did not stop one Australian retailer from obtaining stock. Mwave.com.au, an online store based in Sydney, sells the Zune for $389. It appears to be the first and only retailer in Australia to stock the player, although some second-hand units have been sold through eBay. An Mwave spokesman said "about 100 units" had been sold since it began stocking the Zune in late December last year."

Unsurprisingly, Microsoft Australia has warned against the purchasing of the Zune in Australia for all the reasons that one would expect: no local support, lack of accessories, and an out-of-reach Zune Marketplace. Of course, that hasn't stopped me (and a few Australian MVPs that I know) from adopting one. Yes, it's understandable that Microsoft Australia does not want to be inundated with support requests, but I feel this is moot when (a) the reseller (Mwave) has stated that Microsoft will not support the Zune locally, and (b) courtesy of the non-existent local advertising, most who purchase the Zune in Australia know that it's a US-only release. What would eliminate these uncertainties is an official release of the Zune in Australia and other countries, but hey, that doesn't appear to be happening anytime soon. :(

An Outsider's Look at the Zune

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Talk" @ 08:00 AM

"We have our hands on a Zune. Although not yet launched in Australia, it's possible to import the Microsoft Zune from the USA by buying it from an online store. Would we recommend this course of action before the official launch in mid 2007? Read on."

Not surprisingly, most of the Zune reviews we've read have come from the US, so it's always interesting to hear what reviewers in other countries have to say about Microsoft's new media player. Australia's PC Authority did just that, arriving at the conclusion that it's best to wait for a local release to take advantage of the Zune Marketplace. I tend to agree. The hardware is very capable, but being left out of the Zune Marketplace eats into the user experience, especially when an all-you-can-eat service such as Zune Pass is what you want access to.

Zune to Hit Australia in the New Year?

According to a report at Smarthouse News (which, by the way, we're taking with a huge grain of salt), Microsoft Australia's Managing Director has let it slip that Zune will be in the hands of Australian consumers in the New Year (it's still uncertain whether this means New Year's Day or any time in 2007; we're inclined to think the latter). Belkin's accessories will also be launched with the Zune, and of course, there are already a number of Australian-based manufacturers (e.g., VAF and 22Moo) of Zune accessories, so it's likely that they'll be invited to the social as well.

I'm Darius and I'm Crashing the Party!

Posted by Darius Wey in "Zune Thoughts Site Updates" @ 09:00 AM

Hello from Down Under! I'm Darius Wey, and I've joined Zune Thoughts as a Contributing Editor. Many of you may know of me across the other Thoughts Media web sites - in particular, Pocket PC Thoughts, home to the other Contributing Editor in me. :)

My obsession with mobile technology stemmed from an early age. It started off as a hobby involving simple digital organisers, but soon grew and gobbled up everything in sight - from Windows Mobile-based Pocket PCs and Smartphones to digital audio players (DAPs). Of course, my love for the latter has recently fueled my interest in the Zune. The iPod, as wonderfully successful as it is, seems overly monopolistic, and I'm an audiophile wanting alternatives; current products simply fail to deliver enough oomph. Microsoft has the potential to go above and beyond what Apple currently offers in the digital media space. With some of the same folk behind the Xbox 360 working on the Zune, there is plenty to look forward to, and I can't wait to see what Microsoft has in store for us in the months and years ahead.

Outside of Thoughts Media, I'm a software/web designer and developer, a Microsoft MVP in the "Windows - Mobile Devices" category, and an executive of the Perth Mobility User Group in Australia. Time-permitting, I also dabble with graphic design, digital photography, computer and console gaming (Xbox 360), multimedia production, and sports.

I look forward to working with the staff here at Zune Thoughts, and you (the community), in turning this site into a fantastic place for all of us to sit, talk, drink tea, and discuss all things Zune.
